Jai Shree Krishna!!! October 2005 Newsletter

Krishan Janmasthmi was Lord Krishna’s birthday which we celebrated at midnight on Sat.3rd Sept ‘05.with great enthusiasm. As usual a lot of devotees came to be part of the pooja, the bhajans and the final prayers celebrating Lord Krishna’s birth. Our special thanks go to Paresh and Chiragi Solanki for dressing up their little son as Lord Krishna. It was a very touching moment indeed.

World Class Vocalist Sanjeev

Sanjeev at the Temple: We were privileged to hear a very young classical singer maestro who gave a fantastic recital of bhajans on Sunday 4th Sept.’05. He was particularly pleased that he could perform in front of all the deities, especially on the such an auspicious day as Janmasthmi. Our own young musical masters Reena Kukadia, Charanjit Kaur opened the evening with excellent musical pieces on the Sitar, Tabla and Santoor.

GANAPATIBAPA MORIYA! MANGAL MOORTI MORIYA!

Before this celebration only a few Hindus from Leeds and Yorkshire had ever uttered these words or taken part in celebrating this most colourful, heart-warming and enjoyable utsav that most Indians take for granted back home.

This year we made history by celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi in style, with vigour and with renewed enthusiasm. I now know why this utsav is so eagerly awaited by all. The happiness and the feeling of well-being I saw on everyone’s faces was just amazing.

I really feel that Shree Ganeshji has brought very positive energy within all those who took part throughout the five days and especially all of the 280 people who made the journey to Scarborough, on the cold and windy day, for the visarjan.

Five coaches and five cars came to say goodbye to Ganeshji. As they piled into the two boats there was a feeling of expectation of something special. The singing and the chanting never died down throughout the day.

The visarjan was done at sea and Ganeshji would sink to the bottom of the sea and would break up and once again become the soil from which he was made, ‘Ashes to ashes, dust to dust’.

As they turned back to land there was a feeling of sadness but of satisfaction too that we all had been brought together, chanted together, danced together, laughed together, ate together and prayed together over the five days and as a result we really have grown closer to each other, all because of this little idol of half man half elephant.

Shree Ganeshji arrives carried by Narhariji, overseen by Swami Jyotirmayanand Giriji Lok Maniya Tilak, the famous poet and revolutionary of Bharat revived this utsav and brought it to the working class masses in order to unite and galvanize them into action, for achieving freedom from the British Rulers.

By creating this opportunity of coming together of people from every cast and creed, he managed to create the feeling of togetherness and love for mother India. I felt the same feeling of togetherness on that day when Gujaratis, Maharastrians, Bengalis, Punjabis and Tamils became united to do Visarjan of Lord Ganesh. A truly historic moment for Leeds and the UK. Long it may continue, that’s my prayer to Lord Ganesh and to all of you.

Our special thanks go to Maheshbhai, Rajubhai, Ajitji, Kiran and Ashwinbhai, as well as all the other unnamed volunteers and our two punditjis who worked tirelessly in performing the duties that each one of them took and did it with a big smile on their faces. With your support we can perform wonders.

My biggest thanks go to all of the public of Leeds who supported this event and showed such patience and understanding when things got difficult.

Chandar Prashar, Reena Sonigra and Amit Mistry will be encouraging all the youngsters to join their activities with the help from you the parents. Recruitment for Yoga, Music, Dance and Language Classes will also be taking place at various times during the festivities.

PLEASE HELP US TO HELP YOU !Leeds Hindu Census

In order to apply for various grants we are often asked for facts and figures relating to the Hindu population of Leeds and all our members. It is very embarrassing when we say that we don’t really know, so we will endeavour to carry out our own simple Census of our members, their families and their needs, during the ten days, so that we can ascertain what is the population of the children/teenagers/middle aged and old aged. This will help us tremendously in planning for the future needs of our community. There will be designated people sitting with computers to take down the relevant information and we request that all of us should sit with them and give the basic information to create the much needed database. Our promise is that we will protect all the information with utmost confidentiality and only use it for the purpose of promoting the various activities within our community. This will be completely voluntary
