Newsletter No. 9. 17th June 2009

Respected Elders, Brothers and Sisters

Welcome to the June Newsletter, I hope it reaches you all in the best of health and I am pleased to be able to update you on our recent progress. As you will be aware, the construction of the outer shell of new dining and functional hall adjoining the Mandir is nearing completion. The project is in its advanced stages and would not have been possible without the strong support of the Mandir’s members.

Almost a decade has passed since the opening of our new Mandir and now we are close to supplementing it with a magnificent dining and functional hall. All the members of our community and especially the members of the temple who have donated generously should be proud to say that we have managed to achieve this with our own funds and without endangering our sovereignty.

Special thanks must go to the following groups for their strong support

• Leeds Garba Group and Shri Ramdevpir Bhajan Mandal

• Leeds Pragati Mandal

• Yorkshire Jain Foundation

• Swadhyay Sisters

• Bhagini Mandal

• Sai Devotees

• Swaminarayan Devotees

• Durgapuja Committee

• Murugan Kartik Swami Devotees

Special thanks must also go to those who chose to become a life member by donating

£1151.00

(The List of life members will be displayed on the notice board soon)

Due to delays in the planning authority selecting suitable profiles for our windows, there has been a slight delay but we anticipate our water tight shell will be completed in the next few weeks. As with all major constructions slight problems were encountered along the way, when starting the extension of the dining hall we came across a technical issue with respect to joining the hall to the existing kitchen, after consultation with the planning authority we decided to re-build the kitchen and the resulting kitchen will be of a larger size and therefore much more useful. Unfortunately, due to the ground previously being a quarry we had to dig deeper foundations. The result of rebuilding the kitchen and the deeper foundations was an increase in cost of £50,000. Members are encouraged to come to the site and observe the size of the dining hall, function hall and kitchen.

The new kitchen will be named the ‘Annapurna Rasoighar’ in recognition of generous donation of £25000.00 by Leeds Garba group and Ravdevpir Bhajan Mandal. We are currently looking for sponsors for the dining hall and function hall. Any member who would be interested in sponsoring either of the halls should contact the management committee.

At present despite the generous efforts of our members we are still short of funds to complete the first phase and encourage those of you who wish to donate to do so as soon as possible. Every donation counts and will be very gratefully received.

On completion of the water tight shell part two of the project (completion of the internal work i.e. plastering, ceilings, toilets, lighting, heating, etc) can begin. We hope to complete internal work as soon as possible depending on availability of funds. We are currently in discussion with the bank to arrange a facility to help us achieve this.

On a final note special thanks must go to Madhuben Parmar and Meena Jayantilal Patel for organizing the Nach Baleye Ladies Night in which not only our community but members of all other faiths participated.

The event was strongly sponsored, and we highly appreciate the support from all the councilors.

The event raised more than £ 4200.00 (and some donations are still coming in!)

As a management committee we are determined to be able to host this year’s Navarati Festival in our new hall, of course this is dependent on us being able to generate sufficient funds to be able to complete the project and not encountering any further construction problems.
